Peach Fuzz on the Face. What it is, why it happens, & how best to remove it!
Many of you have been asking questions recently about the soft “peach fuzz” or downy hair that can appear along the sides of the face, and we wanted to shed a little light on what it is, why it happens, and how we can best help you.
This fine, light hair (known as vellus hair) often becomes more noticeable during perimenopause and menopause due to natural hormonal changes — particularly lower estrogen levels. Because this hair is very light and fine, laser hair removal isn’t usually the best option, as laser works best on darker, coarser hair where there is enough pigment to target.
We’re also seeing a big rise in facial shaving or “dermaplaning”, as it’s quick and painless and often marketed as a long-term solution. However, it’s important to understand that dermaplaning is essentially the same as shaving the face. Cutting the hair bluntly at the surface can cause it to grow back feeling prickly, and in our beauty training, we’re taught that repeatedly cutting vellus hair can encourage it to become stronger, thicker terminal hair, which can then be more difficult to manage over time.
Waxing is often the best solution for this type of hair. It removes the hair from the root, leaves the skin feeling smoother and more refined, and, from our experience, doesn’t need to be waxed as frequently as areas like the lip or chin.
